Dear Friends,
Please watch your mailboxes for our latest printed newsletter. I hope you'll enjoy reading the stories and news it contains, and then pass it along to a friend or colleague. Click here to view an online version.
Thank you to all of our guests, volunteers, sponsors and in-kind donors who contributed to the success of Harvest of the Heart. Hundreds of people worked to create a beautiful and heart-centered evening of fine wines, delicious food and celebration of the Ceres community. I'm thrilled to say that together we raised $115,000. That's enough to provide 3 months of nourishing meals and caring support to nearly 200 clients while teaching hundreds of teens about growing, cooking and eating healthy whole foods, and helping us reach thousands of others with knowledge, skills and inspiration about the link between what we eat and our health. Click here to see a slideshow of the event or here to read more about the evening.
On October 14th, Ceres will present the 2nd Annual Cancer Journey, a one-day community event dedicated to providing those touched by cancer and their caregivers with conversations, information and nurturing experiences that complement the healing of body, mind and spirit. Michael Lerner, president and co-founder of Commonweal, will be our keynote speaker. The day-long program also includes a humorous talk by Terri Tate, RN, called Telling Ourselves Well: the Healing Power of Story & Laughter, and a presentation by Annie OConnor LMFT, Tending the Soul: Cultivating Self-Care on the Cancer Journey. Register early, as we expect to sell out. A $15.00 fee includes lunch catered by the Ceres teens. Learn more and register here. Please share this link with friends or family in the area who might benefit from this offering.
Last year, Ceres was honored to receive a Great Nonprofit Health Award, thanks to all of the positive ratings and reviews our community gave us. Can you take a few minutes to help us renew our award for 2012? Click here and share your Ceres story with others. Just a few minutes of your time can help us attract new volunteers, clients and donors.
Finally, tune in to CBS Channel 5 later this month to watch a feature story on Ceres Community Project in conjunction with our Jefferson Award. The piece will air on September 26 during the 6pm evening news, September 27 during Eyewitness news at noon, and September 29 during Early Edition mornings (times vary; check your local listings). The audio portion will also be broadcast on KCBS 740 AM and 106.9 FM (September 26 at 6:50pm, 9:40pm and 11:50pm; and September 30 at 11:50am and 3:50pm).
Warmly,
Cathryn
Artisano Festival Celebrates Local Artisans & Supports Ceres
Mark your calendar for Saturday November 17, and join us at Artisano for a celebration of all that makes Sonoma County so special – small batch artisan wines, restaurants committed to supporting local farmers and ranchers, unique food purveyors, and talented artists. A terrific silent auction will support our work at Ceres while helping you find some very special gifts for the holidays.
If you love great food and wine, you won't want to miss the "Grand Tasting," where local is defined as being within 75 miles. You'll sample artisan ultra-premium wines rarely available to the general public including Acorn Winery, Capture, Failla, Foursight Wines, Garden Creek Vineyards, Kelley & Young, Paul Mathew Vineyards, Valdez Family Winery and many others. Enjoy small plates from renowned restaurants like Peter Lowell's, Daviola Pizzeria and Salumeria, and Charlie Palmer's Dry Creek Kitchen that feature locally raised meat and produce. The event will also include samplings of local artisan cheeses, charcuterie, chocolates, and other culinary delights from producers like Dry Creek Peaches, Malaysia Mei, Shamrock Artisan Goat Cheese and Costeaux French Bakery.
Has the new interest in butchering piqued your interest? Dino Bugica will be giving a demonstration. Wondering how difficult it is to make your own sauerkraut or other healthy fermented vegetables? Ceres Nutrition Director JoEllen Denicola will demystify the process. And if you're an art connoisseur, you'll be able to browse and purchase original works of art from water color artist Cara Brown, ceramicist Amy Halko, Lino Vicente and more.
Hosted by Vintners Inn in the heart of Wine Country, the event takes place from 11am to 4pm, and will be followed by an exclusive family style Harvest Dinner prepared by John Ash & Co. chef Tom Schmidt starting at 5pm. The 75 dinner guests will enjoy intimate conversation with a number of the wine makers featured at Artisano. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit www.artisano.org. Tickets can also be purchased at Relish Culinary Adventures in Healdsburg, Vintners Inn and in the Ceres Community Project office at 7351 Bodega Ave. in Sebastopol.
To find out about donating an item for our auction, contact Deborah Ramelli (deborah@ceresproject.org).

September in the garden
It might be warm out, but the days are getting shorter quickly and that greatly effects plant growth. To get a good fall-winter garden you need to get things in the ground now so they can mature while the days are longer. To plant from seed: beets, carrots, arugula, all the Asian greens, spinach, lettuce and cilantro. To plant from starts: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, chard, leeks, lettuce.
